Making The Most of a Small Space | Fontaine

Quite often our bathrooms or ensuites aren’t as large as we would like, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t design an extraordinary space that you are proud of. With just a little preparation and planning you can make the most of your space by optimizing its functionality and focusing on achieving spaciousness in its design. Ask yourself, is your current layout utilizing your room's footprint and its features to the best of its ability? What services does this room really need to provide? Although changing the layout, adding or reducing pieces might incur more cost to your project, a more efficient  and beautiful space will improve your quality of life and add value to your home.

Things to consider in a smaller bathroom when trying to achieve spaciousness are the lighting, tiles and colour schemes. Rooms automatically look more spacious when they have plenty of natural light from windows or a skylight. Choosing white or lighter coloured vanities and baths (especially with glossy surfaces) will help to reflect the light and give the impression of more room, especially when combined with larger tiles in a light shade. Colour can be added with accessories, towels or even plants to help make your bathroom more welcoming and comfortable.

When choosing your vanity it is important to measure your space, including the room you have for opening drawers and cupboards. This can make a big difference in the size of the vanity you can fit in your bathroom. Knowing maximum depth as well as the width and height will help you to make a choice that you will be happy with for years to come. Also consider the purpose of the room, full storage may not be required in an ensuite, allowing you to choose a smaller vanity that will be more pleasing to the eye. Some of our smaller vanities include our Omega and Chadwick ranges. These are all wall-mounted vanities that can help make your bathroom feel more spacious and modern.

Limiting traffic to your main bathroom or ensuite can reduce the amenities required in these rooms as well as keeping them more private and personal. You may like to consider turning your toilet into a powder room, which will reduce the traffic into the other bathrooms and as a contemporary addition will add value to your home. This can easily be achieved with the addition of a compact wall-mounted sink or vanity, such as the Kudos vanity; which is perfect for areas with limited space. An alternative option could be a wall-mounted basin or an above counter basin on a timber top, both which would look stunning while being functional.

If your bathroom or ensuite is small, you may think there is not enough room for a bath, however this doesn’t need to be the case. With careful planning and accurate measurements, you won’t have to give up the luxury of a relaxing bath at the end of a long day. A smaller freestanding bath may fit in beautifully as a stunning centerpiece, or alternatively, a drop in bath could double as a bath/shower. Our gorgeous Ariana freestanding bathtubs are available in 1300mm and 1400mm lengths, yet there is no compromise on design or comfort. The soft curves will add character and personality to your bathroom without taking up valuable space. The Neptune drop in bath is ideal to create a shower over bath when combined with a Ponti bathtub screen panel, or just on their own against the wall.

Shower over Bath

Choosing the right shower when you have limited space is crucial, your aim is to create spaciousness. A shower over bath can be ideal when it is imperative to have a bath and a shower in a compact space; there are now frameless bath screens to make this classic solution more contemporary. There are other options available such as a streamlined framed shower screen or a frame-less shower screen, they are sleek and modern, with minimal framing which gives the illusion of more space in the room. By designing your shower on a tiled floor that is consistent with the room’s floor tile, visually your eye will combine all the space into one and as a result will help it appear larger.

Extra storage can be added to your bathroom or ensuite with the addition of a mirror cabinet. Mirror cabinets can be installed on the wall or, for something unique and practical, they can be recessed in the wall to maximize the storage space and make the room feel more spacious. A tall mirror cabinet is also an excellent way to make the most of unused wall space, providing additional storage while looking fabulous. Mirrors also complement bathrooms by reflecting light and adding the illusion that your bathroom is larger than it is. We have a wide range of mirrors and cabinets, from one door to 4 doors and in various heights, making it easier for you to find the perfect mirror for your bathroom.

Having the correct toilet suite in your bathroom can make all the difference to how the room looks and feels. Older suites may be quite large and bulky, however there are newer, more streamlined suites available now that don’t compromise on comfort or cistern capacity, but do add style, with various shapes to consider. A unique and practical idea could be installing an in-wall toilet suite. The cistern is hidden in the wall, leaving only the seat and a wall button on view.  By choosing an in wall cistern, you may find a larger vanity will fit in more comfortably. With our Balmain In-Wall toilet suite, you will not only have a streamlined modern look, but you will also have more space in your bathroom.

Accessories are an important part of any bathroom, they can add extra storage space, help to keep the room neat and tidy as well as using wall space rather than the bench top which can make all the difference when bench space is limited. Choosing the correct towel rails can provide plenty of hanging space and still make your room look spacious. Towel hooks can easily go on the back of your door, providing additional hanging space or you could use them to create a unique pattern on your wall. Heated towel rails not only make the most of your wall space but also provide the added luxury of heated towels for after your shower! Soap holders, a glass shelf or even a bath caddy can give you extra room and look fantastic!

If you are requiring additional storage in your bathroom or ensuite, a freestanding floor vanity may be a more practical option with drawers and cupboards reaching the floor, maximizing your space. Have a look at the Alexis or Olivia ranges. These vanities are modern and classy, ranging in size from 450mm – 1200mm wide, enabling you to match your bathrooms regardless of their size. They also have sleek inset basins, perfect when space is at a premium and easy to clean.

And remember, with careful planning any bathroom or ensuite can look beautiful and accommodate your needs, whether it’s for a family, children, teenagers, guests or a private space just for you! We have a range of products which are perfect for smaller spaces including vanitiesbathsshowersmirror cabinetstoilets and accessories to help you make the most out of your space.
